Supervision for Medical and Healthcare Professionals

“Before healing others, heal yourself”

Laozi

Clinical supervision provides the opportunity for medical and healthcare professionals to share workplace stress to help manage personal and professional demands created by the nature of their work. The benefits of supervision include enhanced accountability, increased feeling of support, development of professional skills and improved efficiency.

Supervision is also associated with decreased feelings of isolation and role ambiguity. However, a lack of effective supervision is common amongst the medical and healthcare profession due to common barriers that include a lack of time, space and trust. A lack of shared understanding to the purpose of the supervision, and a lack of ongoing support and engagement from leadership and organisations are also found to be barriers to effective clinical supervision.

Whilst supervision from a professional peer group assists to ensure high standards of medical care are maintained for ongoing patient safety, external supervision supports the medical and healthcare professionals’ mental and emotional wellbeing, provides a space for regular communication and problem solving. This is key in the prevention of symptoms from burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, aiding continued professional learning and personal development.

MBH Training recognises the lack of independent psychological support healthcare professionals have access to within their professional framework which could lead to malpractice.
